Nottingham Forest were linked with Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher during the summer transfer window but a deal proved tricky to do.
The Reds made a cheeky offer to Liverpool that included a fee of around £20 million plus Matt Turner to try and prise Kelleher away.
Liverpool stood firm though and now the Republic of Ireland international is going to be playing second fiddle at Anfield for another season.
On Saturday, Kelleher played against England for the Republic of Ireland with the national media sharing some potential flaws in his game.
Forest may well move for the goalkeeper again in January. However, that might depend on whether or not Matz Sels or Carlos Miguel can truly temp Nuno Espirito Santo to stick with his current options.
The Liverpool stopper has been brutally honest whilst on media duty during his time away with the Republic of Ireland – and it suggests he’d have welcomed a move to Forest.
Kelleher has never been able to hold down the number-one spot at Liverpool. Alisson Becker is currently ahead of him, whilst Giorgi Mamardashvili is signing from Valencia next summer.
The stopper is desperate to leave Anfield for regular game time and he’s now hinted that he’d have been willing to sign for Forest during the transfer window.
He told the Irish Times: “I made it clear in the last few years I want to go and be a number one and lay week in, week out.
“The club made the decision to get another goalkeeper. From the outside looking in, it looks like they have made a decision to go in another direction.
“My ambition has always been clear the last few seasons, that I want to be a number one. It looks like it’s 100 per cent my decision but at times it’s not always in my hands.
“My mission is to go out and play and be a number one. It has been reported that Liverpool had rejected a few bids as well.”
Although Sels has proved a safe pair of hands for Forest, it’s not unreasonable to suggest that he’s not a long-term option for the club between the posts.
Kelleher is only 25-years-old and if Forest get his signature over the line, the Reds could be sorted in that position for a number of years.
Miguel has also signed for the club but the jury will remain out on whether or not he can do it in the Premier League and it’s easy to see why another goalkeeper might be on the radar.
Kelleher is a full international and when he has played for Liverpool, he’s showcased that he’s got a number of quality attributes that makes him worthy of being a number one in the Premier League.
