Considered’ will be the keyword for Nottingham Forest as they head into another transfer window.
Another will be ‘ambition’.
Forest are in a balanced position as they prepare for a third season of Premier League football, needing to make a major sale to enable them to complete much of the strengthening work they hope to do.
But while they will need to tread carefully to remain on the right side of PSR, their hands will not be tied as they look to add to a squad depleted by the expiry of five loans plus three players departing at the end of their contracts.
What positions are they looking at this summer?
Forest want a right-sided central defender or possibly even two central defenders, depending on departures (more on that later).
They also wish to add a striker. Taiwo Awoniyi and Chris Wood have both demonstrated their top-flight quality but have also had injury issues and, with Divock Origi’s uninspiring loan spell having come to an end, Forest hope to sign a forward who can challenge both men for a starting place.
Callum Hudson-Odoi and Anthony Elanga were both very successful signings last summer, but Forest still crave another wide option to give them more strength in depth in that area.
For the third season in a row, Forest also find themselves wanting to strengthen in the goalkeeper position. Matz Sels was a steadying influence after joining from Strasbourg in January, but Forest still want to add more quality between the posts.
Forest also want somebody who can provide backup and competition for Morgan Gibbs-White, which is why they added Gio Reyna in January. Forest are also aware that they lack a little depth in the full-back positions, with Gonzalo Montiel and Nuno Tavares both having departed at the end of their loans.
