Everton started brightly enough, passing the ball around and looking like they had intent, but that quickly wore off. Richarlison was a no-show for the first half an hour or so while both sides competed to see who was more adept at giving away the ball in the middle.
Then as the half went on, both sides tried giving the ball away multiple times in their own respective halves. Burnley had a couple of chances created from setpieces and deep balls into the box, but were mostly handled by Jordan Pickford with Yerry Mina and Michael Keane standing tall.
Alex Iwobi looked the liveliest of the Blues while Fabian Delph continued to see most of the ball in the middle. Silva’s side did create a couple of chances but as they have done so often this season, failed to execute.
The former Arsenal man Iwobi was the guiltiest of the lot firing his shot right at a defender when he had all day. Meanwhile Mina got to a number of corners but failed to make meaningful contact.
Everton again started brightly in the second half without creating any real opportunities, before captain Seamus Coleman shot the Blues in the foot. Two late tackles, inadvertent yellows both, and the resultant red card was deserved. Gylfi Sigurdsson went off to make way for Djibril Sidibe to make up the numbers in defence, with over half an hour to play.
And then it got worse. Hendrick had already gotten a chance in the first half from an overhit corner, and then with Everton not learning their lesson at the setpiece, let him take a similar shot from a deep corner and his volley was perfect, beating Pickford at the near post. 1-0 and game over right?
A beleaguered-looking Marco Silva threw on Moise Kean and Andre Gomes for Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Morgan Schneiderlin, but still failed to create any real chances as Burnley‘s defence held firm.
Is this it for Marco Silva? The international break is going to be a worrying fortnight for Everton Football Club.
