Newcastle United were able to bring in Will Osula from Sheffield United to strengthen their options up front in the recent summer transfer window. The young Danish international scored for Denmark U21s during the recent international break, but hasn’t yet been able to oust Alexander Isak from leading the line.
The Swedish international is one of the best in the top flight at what he does and is well worth the £63million that Newcastle spent back in the summer of 2022. There remains some question marks over his fitness in the long-term and with Callum Wilson also out injured, there had been some hope from the Magpies’ faithful that they’d spend big this summer.
One player linked with a move to St. James’ Park was Canadian international and Lille striker Jonathan David. Valued at £42m, Newcastle would have to be creative if they were to bring him in during the recent summer window, given the PSR debacle earlier this summer.
Instead, they opted for a cheaper alternative in Osula, but with Wilson in the final year of his Toon contract, it’s a transfer they could revisit in the future given the 24-year-old is in the final year of his contract. Going by recent reports, David certainly seems up for a move to the English top flight.
“I’m open to anything,” he told the Athletic in a recent interview. “I think obviously the Premier League is regarded as one of the best league in the world. And for me it’s not the Premier League or bust. I’m open to anything and every league has its challenges.
“I spoke to a couple of teams. I spoke with coaches. But ultimately made the decision to stay. What am I waiting for? I guess now it’s easier to say. I’m in the last year of my contract. Eventually my contract is going to run out. So then we’ll see. We’ll see what happens next year.”
