Stateside Celtic fans lapped up the chance to see their heroes in America – and couldn’t resist the chance at a dig at their rivals Rangers during their thrilling pre-season friendly win over Manchester City.
The Hoops might have been taking on Pep Guardiola’s superstars almost 4000 miles away across the Big Pond but when you are one half of one of the fiercest rivalries in world football then you will take any opportunity to have a dig at your local foes and the champions are emboldened after a season where they finished undefeated against their eternal foes.
And after a storming start from Celtic which saw them take the lead through Nicolas Kuhn, the fans inside the Kenan Memorial Stadium at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, could be heard chanting “Are you Rangers in disguise”. Kuhn went on to add another with Kyogo Furuhashi and Luis Palma also on target in a 4-3 victory over the English Premier League champions.
Supporters of both sides had to be evacuated around 90 minutes before the game due to a ‘”severe weather” warning, and those already taking their seats promptly left. The area had been subject to sporadic storms in the days leading up to the fixture and there had been a flash flood warning the day before.
