Connor Goldson departing Rangers for Birmingham City this summer could give Philippe Clement the chance to sign a new defender in his place.
Reports linking Goldson with a switch to the English side, who were relegated to the third tier last season, have continued to surface in recent days as questions persist over his Ibrox future [BirminghamLive, 8 July].
Conversely, the Daily Record reported on 2 May that the Gers are interested in Birmingham’s captain Dion Sanderson, possibly re-igniting a possible transfer after previous links.
With Philippe Clement leading a refresh of the existing squad at Ibrox this summer, negotiating a possible swap deal for a player seven years Goldson’s junior could be a shrewd move for the Belgian to make.
Connor Goldson transfer swap could be ideal scenario for Rangers
Like several Rangers players who have been at the club for some time, Goldson’s performances took a notable dip towards the back end of the season as the light blues’ league title charge came off the rails.
If Clement is happy to allow Goldson to leave this summer, a replacement in the form of Sanderson, with over 100 EFL Championship appearances to his name, wouldn’t be the worst of makeweights.
Sanderson, at 24 and having captained Birmingham already, would certainly go some way towards doing that, and if the Gers’ hierarchy can strike a deal which sends Goldson the other way, Clement could have another potential skipper with plenty of potential on his hands.
