Striker Taiwo Awoniyi was not involved in Nottingham Forest’s pre-season victory over Chesterfield for personal reasons.
The front man also picked up a slight knock during the Reds’ first week back at the Nigel Doughty Academy after their summer break. However, he is expected to make the trip to Spain for a training camp next week as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side continue their preparations for the upcoming Premier League campaign.
Awoniyi has been hampered by injury issues in his first two years at the City Ground. Groin surgery and a thigh problem sidelined him for spells last term, and boss Nuno has admitted it is an important pre-season for the Nigerian.
In Awoniyi’s absence, goals came from Chris Wood, Josh Bowler and Ibrahim Sangare at the SMH Group Stadium. Nuno also gave run-outs to new signings Carlos Miguel, Elliot Anderson and Eric da Silva Moreira.
Forest have three friendlies scheduled during their time in Spain. They will face Sunderland, Millwall and Elche at the Pinatar Arena.
A match against Villarreal at the City Ground and a meeting with fellow Evangelos Marinakis-owned side Olympiacos in Greece will complete the Reds’ pre-season programme. Their opening fixture of the new campaign is against Bournemouth on August 17.
