Chris Sutton has criticised Sean Dyche’s negative comments on Dominic Calvert-Lewin after Everton lost 3-2 to Aston Villa on Saturday (14 September).
The striker missed a golden opportunity to restore the two-goal advantage after Ollie Watkins got Villa back into the game, squandering a one-on-one chance with Emi Martinez
Instead, Watkins’ second goal and a stunner from Jhon Duran saw Dyche’s side condemned to a second consecutive 3-2 comeback defeat, and the manager was rather honest about the missed chance.
Speaking via the It’s All Kicking Off podcast on Monday (16 September), Sutton said: “How does Dominic Calvert-Lewin feel that the manager has hung him out to dry?
“Strikers miss chances, but it was actually a brilliant move from Everton – quick, sharp passing, timing of the run was excellent. He just couldn’t make his mind up quickly enough
His touch was so straight that it allowed Martinez to get his angles right, who was brilliant for not committing. Calvert-Lewin had to make a decision, deciding to go around Martinez, before brilliant last-ditch defending from Ezri Konsa.
Sean Dyche is absolutely telling the truth, but sometimes it’s wise not to hang your star striker out to dry.”
